Frequently asked questions:
Q: Do you go to competition; i.e. E Hula Mau, Heiva, Tahiti Fete, etc?
A: Short answer is No. As of right now, we only compete at the Siva Afi competition in Long Beach. The main focus is on learning culture, tradition, dances and working as a family unit through dance & music. I want to create a relaxed learning environment with other goals in mind outside of competitions.
Q: Do you do performances?
A: Yes, we have several shows throughout the year. However, ALL shows are OPTIONAL as they will require extra time for rehearsals, costumes and effort. There is no additional cost for practices but there is costs for costumes. The majority of our costumes are made by the students & families. We encourage everyone to learn how to make/sew their costumes & implements as much as possible for the reasons to keep cost low for the students but mainly to teach & perpetuate traditions. We are not in the business of just teaching memorized motions. There's a bigger goal to accomplish at Leiali`inani.
Q: How is makeup classes handled?
A: If Leiali`inani cancels class, we will coordinate a makeup with the students. If the student misses the class, no make up is provided unless discussed in advance.
Q: What class do I start in if I had previous dance experience?
A: We will place all students in a beginning level class so please discuss with teacher(s) in advance for appropriate class placement. There are many styles of dance from various schools. We want to ensure that our dancers move "As One" so it's important that all dancers pick up Leiali`inani's style of dance.
Q: How is placement or moving up to the next level handled?
A: It is strictly by the teacher(s)'s discretion. Please trust the teachers that they are working towards continuous progression for every student.
Q: What does Registration Fees cover?
A: The registration fee covers the costs of paperwork processing and computer time required to set up your student in the attendance and tuition-billing system. Fees include the purchase of Leiali`inani shirt that is required for all studio events.
Q: Are you the Kumu?
A: Although the title "Kumu" has been used more commonly to address the teacher, I am not a Kumu in the tradition way of going thru the `uniki process. I am the teacher, founder & owner of Leiali`inani. My hula `ohana simply call me Hileka or for the keiki, Miss Hileka. I'm a traditionalist & have a deep respect for na kumu that have gone thru the traditional `uniki process. Although it might be fine for some teachers to be addressed as "Kumu", I would prefer to give the respect & proper rights to that title to those that should truly be called Kumu. I have been blessed to learn music, dance & traditions through family & halau. I take everything that I share and create with my students very serious and do my best to ensure that I do not present anything that is misrepresented so that I can properly & respectfully honor those that came before me, honor my own na Kumu that have trusted me with knowledge & create an environment for my students that simply want to learn.
